What is ‘Are you rvSafe?’

In response to the alarming statistic that two-thirds of road deaths in Australia occur on rural roads, and with over 90% of camping trips enjoyed in these areas, we’ve partnered to bring you Are You rvSafe? – a national RV road safety campaign. This seven-part TV and YouTube series fills the gap in RV safety education, ensuring that Australians of all experience levels are prepared for safe travels.

We covered Episode Three, when John and Borgy guided our RV learners through the ins and outs of towing and reversing. Now, let’s dive into Episode Four!

Essential Bush Fixes for RV Travellers

In Episode Four of Are You rvSafe? John takes the reins and gets our learners up to speed on some essential bush fixes and roadside checks to keep you moving when you’re in the middle of nowhere.

Bush essentials and must-haves:

  • - Preparation is key for a smooth journey. John’s must-pack list includes:

  • - Filters: Spare oil, air and fuel filters are crucial for dusty conditions.

  • - Torque wrench: Ensures wheel nuts are tightened securely.

  • - Ryco catch can: Have one installed before you leave and check it every 10,000 kilometres. It keeps your engine clean by catching oil vapours.

Quick Fixes: Handling Tyre Punctures on the Road

Tyre punctures happen, but John’s demo shows how simple it is to plug a tyre with a plug kit. Plugging gets you to the next town where you will need to replace the tyre ASAP. Watch Jess have a go plugging a tyre in this video here.

Daily Rig Checks: A Routine for Safety

Regular checks can prevent major issues:

  • - After refueling, feel the wheel hubs and tyres for heat.

  • - Inspect under the rig for loose bolts or worn cables.

  •  Snake Bite Safety:

A snake bite kit is a non-negotiable. Key tips to follow include:

    • - Keep the victim still to slow the spread of venom.

    • - Apply a pressure bandage and immobilise the limb.

    • - Splint the area.
