RV Safety Education for All Australian Travellers

In response to the alarming statistic that two-thirds of road deaths in Australia occur on rural roads and that over 90% of camping trips are enjoyed in rural areas, we’ve been working with our partners on ‘Are You RV Safe?’,  a new national RV road safety campaign.

This seven-part TV and YouTube series seeks to address the gap in RV safety education and ensure that all Australians, regardless of their RV experience, are well informed and prepared for safe travel.

Last month, we talked about Episode One … let’s now talk about Episode Two!

Episode Two: Key Tips for Safe Towing and RV Setup

In Episode Two of the Are You RV Safe? series, John and Borgy guide our three RV enthusiasts through the essential steps to ensure safe travels on the road. Whether you’re towing a caravan or camper trailer, or driving a motorhome, this episode simplifies key topics like towing safety, accessories and weight distribution.

Choosing the Right RV and Tow Vehicle Combo

The episode starts with a breakdown of choosing the right RV and/or vehicle and RV combo, focusing on the importance of ensuring your tow vehicle can handle the weight of your rig. Borgy stresses that this is critical for both safety and legality on the road.

Essential Accessories for Safe Towing

Not all accessories are created equal when towing. This episode highlights must-haves like reversing cameras for safety in tight spots, upgraded tyres and suspension for handling different terrains, and extended mirrors for clear visibility. These practical tips help ensure a smoother, safer journey.

The Role of Weight Distribution in RV Safety

Weight distribution plays a crucial role in handling your RV safely. Poor distribution can cause trailer sway and affect handling. This episode demonstrates how to balance the load for a stable and comfortable drive, emphasising the importance of keeping weight centred over the axles.

Tips to Avoid Trailer Sway

One key lesson from Episode Two is how to manage trailer sway – dispelling myths like accelerating out of it. Instead, easing off the throttle and using trailer brakes, if available, are the correct techniques to regain control.
