Fish and Camp at Copeton Dam
Copeton Dam is a fisherman’s paradise, being one of only two inland waterways in New South Wales where there is no closed season on Murray Cod. The size of some of the fish is beyond belief. The dam has a water capacity three times the size of Sydney Harbour and the park is set on 900 hectares of rural bushland, offering a unique day trip or holiday experience. Camp by the water’s edge, or find a nice secluded spot to enjoy the peace and tranquillity that only the great outdoors provides. You will see stars that you have never seen before in the wide expanse of the unhindered night sky.
Go Gem Fossicking in the Inverell Region
People have been seeking their fossicking fortune in the Inverell region since at least 1875, when diamonds were found in the alluvium of Copes Creek close to the junction of the Gwydir River. This led to the discovery of what was once the richest diamond field in New South Wales.
Not only can diamonds be found here, but also black tourmaline, topaz, gold, quartz and sapphires. In fact, the sapphires found here are so blue and plentiful that it’s how Inverell became known as ‘The Sapphire City’.
Head to the Visitor Information Centre for the latest information on where to fossick and where to hire some equipment.
Explore Inverell’s National Parks and Wilderness Areas
The Inverell region’s waterways, National Parks and wilderness areas all have spectacular scenery. Kwiambal National Park is very popular with some amazing walks, as well as Macintyre Falls.
